Create a New Page

The true wonder of the Content Management System is the ability to create, edit, and publish pages on your site without knowing HTML. This tutorial walks you through the basic task of creating a new page in your KeepOpen.com site.

It does not walk you through all the functions of the edit. In an effort to answer questions as succinctly as possible, and make the appropriate tutorials easy to find, we're splitting things out into smaller tasks.

Step One: Log In

The quickest and easiest way to add a page to your site is to first navigate to the place where you want to add the page and then type "/edit" on the end. In this case, I am creating the tutorial you are reading, so I chose to log into the tutorials section of the site. It looks something like this:

appendEdit

The system will then ask you to log in. Enter your username and password.

Step Two:

Add a page using the interface. Select "Silva Document" from the menu. If it does not automatically move to the next screen, click on the "New" button.

Step Three: Name and Title Your Page

Before you can edit your page you need to give it an ID and Title. The document's ID is its name in the file system, so it needs to have no spaces, and needs to not have the same name as any other file. The Title is how the document will be referred to in the title bar of the browser and in any automatically generated links to the new page.

Step Four: Edit Your New Page

This is the fun step. You get to edit your page, add your content, save it and publish it. This is the step where you get to tell us all about your hopes and dreams, or products and capabilities.

The editor works like a words processor, with the exception of the addition of a publish function. In order to post your new page to the internet you must save and then publish it. This is useful for sites that allow people to have multiple levels of authority to write, edit, and publish content...but for the rest of us it's just an extra little step. It's also useful if you want to come back and finish something without posting your half-completed work on the web. You can save a document and then edit it again, and when you're done you can publish it.

Step Five : Preview and Publish

When you are done you save your document by clicking on the Save button. I know, who woulda thought? If you want to see what your new page will look like in the site, to check formatting, etc, you can click on "Public Preview" at the top of the page. I personally recommend this. It's generally good measure to make sure your formatting looks like you think it will.

It'll look something like this:

Preview Your Document

It will, of course, look like your site, instead of ours. Notice that at the top of the page there are "Back Arrow" and "Publish Now" buttons. If the page looks like you think it should, go ahead and click the "Publish Now" button. If you want to make changes click the Arrow. It'll bring you back to the editor to make changes.

When you're done, remember to click Save before you rePreview and then publish it when you're happy...or at least when you're satisfied with the content and its formatting. Silva is a great CMS, but it can't fix everything, you know. ;-)
